The origins of quilling are uncertain, but some believe it started as early as ancient Egypt or first century A.D. China. Quilling is considered by some to have roots in Ancient Egypt where thin metal strips were used for decoration. They were found in the Pharaohs tombs.

But even if do not take Pharaohs into consideration, quilling is a very old art form. Using paper stripes as quilling material, it started in the late 1500s as a pastime of genteel ladies and continued throughout the early 1800s. However, it was an expensive hobby and remained something limited to the upper class.

Besides, Renaissance-era nuns and monks in France and Italy used quilling to decorate religious objects with gilded paper. It was cheeper then gold and silver filigree and ivory carvings. The designs they created often imitated elaborate, gilded ironwork that was popular at the time.

Quilling gained even more popularity in the 1700s, when female aristocrats in Europe and American began practicing that craft. As it was not physically or emotionally taxing, it was considered an excellent pastime for these "ladies of leisure." Quilling was taught to upper class ladies in England during the 18th century. It was considered an innocent pastime for young ladies.

Quilling was brought to North America by early settlers. Besides, they say North American Indians were using porcupine quills.

Europeans used a quill (feathers) as a tool to roll the paper strips into coils. That give the name to the technique.

Still, perhaps the most stunning thing about quilling is that this craft is not only for making greetings card and souvenirs. It also helps to produce incredibly beautiful large-scale designs like framing, decoration for mirrors, clocks, furniture, lampshades, and even billboards. Some centuries ago, guilds of furniture masters were working for half a year or even longer to decorate a table or a bureau with this paper-rolling.

Quilling is also known as paper filigree. In some European churches they made trimmings for the Gospel and icon decoration, using gilded edge quilling paper.

Thus quilling is used for a great number of things.  Moreover, modern quillers are using not only paper stripes, trying to make quilling projects more durable.

For e. g. some craft magazines in America showed using fabric ribbons or thin plastic stripes for quilling.

I have also seen tin stripes used for making quilling jewellery. Besides, even made of paper, quilling jewellery might not only be so simple to serve decoration for small girls or teen-agers only!

Some desingers use quilling to decorate shop windows, e. g. the one on the left-hand photograph from Japan.

Now just a few words about quilling and graphic artsю. I suspect, that perhaps Maser Number One in this field is Yulia Brodskaya from Moscow, who lives in the UK at present. Suppose, her Web-site is an endless source of inspiration.

Classical quilling

The standard width of each strip is 1/8 inch, but this varies depending on the design desired.
Popular shapes created from paper coils include flowers, leaves, ornate scrolls and abstract patterns.

Quilling is a kind of paper filigree, fulfilled using differentquilled snowflake
      - paper stripe size (from 3mm to 3cm)
      - paper stripe length and colour (or you can even make multu-coloured stripes, having glued those of different colours together)
      - type of paper stripe edge (for it can be smooth or fluffy)
      - texture of paper stripe (see different types used for 3D quilling)

One can also vary colour of the background or even do without background at all, making quilling lace transparent. Paper coils can be flat or 3D. You can see some of the flat ones on the left-hand photograph, or search for them in the i-net.

Using glue, these spirals can be adhered as tightly or loosely as you like.

Shapes that resemble teardrops, leaves and half-moons can be created by pinching and molding the paper.

Most quilled shapes begin as either a closed coil or an open coil. A closed coil is rolled quite tightly and an open one much more loosely.
